Burn – Part 7

It is totally dark.

We see nothing.

We hear a harsh door buzzer pressed long, then released.

It is ignored.

The buzzer sounds again. Only longer this time.

Again it is ignored.

Once again the buzzer. This time the buzzer is not released for a long time.

FOREST
(O.S)
All Right, All right. Mother fuckers!

Over the constant annoying buzz we hear someone stumble in the dark and knock into a table the contents of that table smash on to the floor.

FOREST
(O.S)
Jesus Christ! Shut the fuck up!

AGAIN THE DOOR BUZZER!

Lights flicker on and we now see

INT. FORESTS APARTMENT – NIGHT.

The apartment is a stinking mess. Carpet long ripped up. Piles of books everywhere as if stacked by a demented poltergeist.

THE BUZZER is now just held on constantly.

FOREST is a large scruffy man late forties or so. Hard to tell with his unruly beard. He shouts in to the intercom on the wall next to the light switch and realises its not working.

FOREST
Fuck!

The Buzzer goes off again!

He runs to the other side of the apartment and throws aside the heavy curtains that were blocking out the neon lights of a Strip club.

Out on the balcony he leans out and down into the street.

Below is Tennent Looking up at him holding his police ID.

FOREST(CONT’D)
What the fuck do you want?

TENNENT
Open up fat boy.

Forest buzzes Tennent up. With his toe Tennent pushes the door open and stands in the doorway looking around disgusted by the mess.

FOREST (CONT’D)
What the fuck do you want Tennent? Do you even know what time it is?
TENNENT
Actually I do. You got some coffee?
FOREST
You coming in?

Tennent smiles and walks in looking around making sure that it’s just he and the forger alone in the apartment.

Forest goes to the kitchen and starts making the coffee. Tennent wanders around the flat looking for clues or hidden guests.

TENNENT
I’m guessing you haven’t heard the news?
FOREST
What news?
TENNENT
Petrov’s dead.
FOREST
What?
TENNENT
Yep. Fat bastard got his head blown off.
FOREST
Fuck!

Is his initial reaction then he thinks some more.

FOREST (CONT’D)
Fuck.
TENNENT
Yep. That’s what I thought.
FOREST
When?
TENNENT
Hard to tell. What with the body being all burnt up like that.
FOREST
What?
TENNENT
So you don’t know anything? No one asking for a little something emergency like? Last minute request? Best fake passports in town. Everyone knows that.
FOREST
Not everyone.
TENNENT
You’re down-playing your gift.

Tennent goes into the forger’s bedroom.

FOREST
I’ve been asleep. So who’s in charge?
TENNENT
Well that’s hard to say.
FOREST
What?
TENNENT
It’s a little difficult to tell who’s alive and who’s dead.
FOREST
What?

Tennent comes out of the bedroom holding a mobile phone.

TENNENT
It would seem that someone pissed off Petrov enough to wipe out him and his whole crew and then burned down the club.

Tennent makes a point of looking at the phone but makes no attempt to unlock it.

FOREST
Fuck off! Who would dare?

Tennent looks up, handing the phone to Forest .

TENNENT
You have new messages.

Forest  immediately puts the phone face down onto the kitchen bench top and finishes making coffee, offering Tennent a cup.

TENNENT (CONT’D)
No thank you.

Forest  puts one cup down and takes a sip of the other.

FOREST
You should go now.

Tennent drags a chair into the centre of the apartment and then goes and stands by the open curtain and looks into the street.

Forest slowly edges to the chair.

TENNENT
Sit down. Go ahead.

Forest doesn’t need to be told twice.

TENNENT (CONT’D)
I had a strange dream last night…this morning.

There is a long silence. As if Tennent is replaying the dream or something in the street is diverting his attention.

TENNENT (CONT’D)
They say that you forget most of your dreams within the first ten minutes or so of being awake. Most of the time…I don’t even even remember that. It’s not that I don’t dream and it’s not like I don’t try to remember, but try as I might I just can’t hold on to them. It’s always been like this. There was a time I didn’t dream at all. Or at least I think I didn’t. That was so long ago I have no idea if that’s even correct.

Forest  isn’t sure what to make of that little speech but it’s spooked him.

TENNENT (CONT’D)
Drink up. Your coffee’s getting cold.
