Part Five

READ FROM THE BEGINNING

EXT. BLOCK OF FLATS – LATER
Jack watches the flats.
Watches his back.
When he’s sure his no longer being followed he makes his way up to the forth floor.

CUT TO:

INT. FLATS, FORTH FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
Still a little hesitant he makes one last scan around and comfortable that he isn’t being followed he puts one ear against the door.
He listens hard.
Then looks through the spy hole in the door.
Then knocks.
No answer.
He knocks again.
Always watching the spy hole
He knocks one more time…
And the spy hole goes dark.
Jack kicks in the front door knocking the occupant flailing backwards.

CUT TO:

INT. SHELLY’S FLAT – CONTINUOUS
The girl in the blue dress lies on the floor only she’s showered and washed and in her “get away outfit”.
She raises a pistol at Jack but he snatches it away.

JACK
Jesus Shelly.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I think you broke my nose.

Jack helps her up.

JACK
Sorry about that. Couldn’t be sure it was you or your friend.

Gives her a cursory once over then shoves her deeper into her flat. Her nose is apparently fine.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
What the Fuck Jack? My friend? What you talking about?

He lets her go and has a look around.
The flat is an open plan affair. A council flat conversion. Modest.
He sees Shelly has some bags packed.

JACK
Good. You’ve got the right idea.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
What the fuck you want?

JACK
You know what Shelly. Leon’s goons may be thick but they ain’t stupid. It won’t take them long to figure out that you’re missing…

Shelly continues packing.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
You’re a fucking arsehole Jack.

JACK
Yeah. You’re not wrong but right now I’m the only arsehole who’s not going to take a blowtorch to you… except maybe your friend the shooter. You wanna tell me what the deal is? Who he is?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I don’t know what you’re talking about.

She slides a hand into the final suitcase and surreptitiously removes a small blade.

JACK
Shelly I fucking opened the door for you. Your mug is on the CCTV. You flirted with most of the club and Arnold was asking after you and it would seem… found you. How long before the crew realises that it’s your shoe in the alley with the fat cunts body?

She goes to Jack.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I suppose you’re going to be my knight in shining armour… going rescue me?

One hand caresses his chest…

JACK
Fuck off Shelly we know each other’s game far too well for that. I’m giving you a head start… that’s all.

…the other unseen brings the knife.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Why should I help you?

JACK
For old times sake.

Jack grabs the knife and throws it across the room then kisses her.
She slaps him. Hard.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
You’re such a cliche.

JACK
You got everything?

Three suit cases.
Way too much.

JACK (CONT’D)
Pick one Shelly.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
What the fuck!

JACK
How did you expect to go on the run with three suit cases?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Some guy would help me.

Jack takes the one closest by the door and marches out.

JACK
Yeah. No doubt.

CUT TO:

EXT. FLATS, FORTH FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
Shelly leads with one bag. The one with wheels.
Jack catches up whilst looking out over the courtyard.
Jack halts Shelley.
Down below they see Leon’s kid Louis pull up with a henchman, GRILLO and a massive bruiser, THE GOON.

CUT TO:

INT. FLATS, BACK STAIRWELL – CONTINUOUS
Jack follows her down.
She’s struggling with her suit case. One step at a time. The damn thing is heavy and awkward.
At this rate they’ll be here all night.
Jack wrestles her fingers free but she fights back.

JACK
Let it go. No time.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
No. No.

JACK
Let it go!

Shelly pops the case open and inside along with frivolously hosiery is a 45 and a couple of knives. Jack takes the 45. Shelly takes the knives.
She gives Jack a dirty look.

JACK (CONT’D)
You’ll get it back… don’t worry.

The two make their way down the back stairs.
One of Louis’ goons starts making his way up the back stairs.
Shelly dives into the first floor landing hiding behind the door. Jack does the same.

CUT TO:

INT. FLATS, FIRST FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
Jack turns and sees Shelly walking off.
He follows her through a series of twisting corridors.

CUT TO:

INT. FLATS, STAIRWELL – CONTINUOUS
The Goon finds Shelly’s opened suitcase and phones it in.
Then goes back down the stairs.
He stops at the first floor and makes an educated guess and enters the first floor.

INT. FLATS, FIRST FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
One end of this floor ends at a dead end the other through twisting corridors.
The goon continues his pursuit.

CUT TO:

INT. FLATS, FIRST FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
Shelly knocks on a red door.
She knocks again.
Jack checks the rear not comfortable being in this situation.
The door opens and a lovely old lady opens the door.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Hi Mavis. I’m real sorry it’s so late…Strange question can I use your landing?

CUT TO:

INT. FLATS, FIRST FLOOR – CONTINOUS
The goon walks to end of the corridor and ends up near the red door.
He looks around…
No one here.
Dead end.
… Then departs.

CUT TO:

EXT. FLATS, GROUND FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
Shelly shimmies down a drain pipe from the old lady’s balcony with Jack not far behind.
When he’s down on terra firma he opens his mouth…

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Don’t. Don’t even ask. Where’s your car?

CUT TO:

INT. JACK’S CAR – SOON AFTER
They speed away. Jack driving. Shelly with her feet on the dash.

JACK
Ok Shelly talk.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Where we going?

JACK
Somewhere safe. Safer than your flat.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I thought you were only giving me a head start?

JACK
Don’t push it. Why’d you kill Arnold?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I didn’t.

JACK
Then who did?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I don’t know. Never saw him before. Cute. You saw him. I mean, you chased him.

JACK
Yeah.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
I thought he was going to shoot me. The guy he was talking to I think told him to.

JACK
What guy?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
After he shot Arnold he got a call… on his mobile.

JACK
He shot Arnold and then answered his phone?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Yeah.

JACK
What makes you think the caller was giving him instructions?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Jack. I’ve seen that look before.

JACK
Really?

Shelly looks at Jack – really.
Jack thinks long and hard.

JACK (CONT’D)
What kind of gun did he have?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
What? How would I know?

JACK
Come on Shelly. Think!

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
A revolver. I think.

A shiver goes down Jack’s spine.
He is silent for a long time.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY (CONT’D)
Jack?

JACK
Anyone know about us?

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
You and me?

Now it’s Jacks turn to stare back.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY (CONT’D)
Watch the fucking road!

Jack returns to driving.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY (CONT’D)
That’s all you care about isn’t it. You selfish pig.

JACK
You know that’s not true.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Yeah? Then where the fuck were you when Arnold was threatening me?

JACK
Shelly..

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Don’t Shelly me. Just… Don’t

JACK
I’m sorry.

BLUE DRESS/SHELLY
Yeah. Me too.

Long uncomfortable silence.

JACK
Tell me everything and start from the beginning.
